Floyd County Supervisors Approve Recommendations of Five MEI’s

FTwo weeks after appointing a County Medical Examiner (ME), the Floyd County Board of Supervisors has recommended five medical examiner investigators to add to the roster.

On December 4th, Supervisors named Dr. David Schrodt of Charles City as ME, effective through December of 2025. The move came after the County was notified that the four county-appointed medical examiners, who are physicians, do not want to be reappointed in January 2024. However, Schrodt would stay as ME if the county utilizes MEIs.

At their regular meeting December 18th, the Board first passed a motion to select four MEIs, but Supervisor Dennis Keifer expressed concern over the number of AMR Ambulance staff recommended by Schrodt.

In a report to the Board last month, State Medical Examiner Death Investigator and County Liaison Mark Bethel said it was not unusual for ambulance personnel to serve as MEIs. After rescinding their initial resolution, Board Chair Mark Kuhn (cue-in) offered a compromise.

With a new number of MEIs proposed, Supervisor Jim Jorgensen named appointees for approval.

The Board approved the motion for five MEIs on a 3-0 vote.
