North Carolina Woman Sentenced on Fraud,Theft Charges in Northeast Iowa

A North Carolina woman could serve a half-decade in prison on over a half-dozen felony charges in northeast Iowa.

50-year-old Gloria Pantelis was arrested in March after First Banks in Waverly, Plainfield, and Cedar Falls accused her of fraudulently cashing checks for over $7,000, using identification stolen in George Wyth State Park in October of last year. She was also accused of cashing fraudulent checks for over $15,000 at a Waverly business in late February.

In August, she pleaded guilty to all charges including two counts of second-degree theft, three counts of forgery, and two counts of identity theft.

Earlier this month, Pantelis was sentenced to a prison term not to exceed five years and she will be allowed to serve her time concurrently from both cases. She was also charged with a $1,000 fine on each count, but those fines have been suspended.

Her sentencing date has been set for September 25th in Bremer County District Court.

While in the Bremer County Jail on the forgery and theft charges, Pantelis was accused of assaulting another inmate in May. That charge was dismissed.
