Heat, Drought Trigger Ag Programs for Farmer Relief
Some financial relief may be available for cattle producers following recent extreme weather conditions.Â
With temperatures last week pushing 100 degrees, Ron Pethoud with the Chickasaw County office of the USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) says the Livestock Indemnity Program payment rate has been activated to support livestock producers in the Midwest.
LIP payments are made at a rate of 75% of the prior year’s average fair market value of the livestock. Notice must be filed within 30 days of when the loss of livestock was first apparent to the producer.Â
Extreme drought has also been expanding in northeast Iowa, which Pethoud says has triggered the Livestock Forage Program.
Farmers and producers are advised to contact their County’s FSA to see if weather conditions qualify them for the Livestock Indemnity and/or Livestock Forage programs.
