Charles City Golf Cart Ordinance Becomes Official Friday (08.25)

An ordinance to allow golf carts to be driven on Charles City streets becomes official Friday (08.25).

The City Council approved the ordinance Monday night, with stipulations that restrict travel to streets with speed limits of 25 mph or less and excludes Highway 18, Highway 14, and Gilbert Street, although golf carts can cross those roads. Golf carts are also not allowed on any recreational, bike or walking trails as well as sidewalks.

Golf carts can be driven on Wildwood Golf Course, but only when the operator is playing golf.

Operators must have a valid driver’s license and be 18 or older and golf carts can only be operated from sunrise to sunset.

Golf carts must display a bike safety flag and slow moving vehicle sign, plus have adequate brakes and a rear view mirror on the drivers side.

The number of people on a golf cart is restricted to the number of seats in the vehicle’s design and no one may stand on the golf cart while it is moving.
