Wednesday to be Hottest Day of the Week for Northeast Iowa

A stretch of dangerous heat will continue to bake the area into Thursday, with the hottest conditions Wednesday (08.23) afternoon into the early evening with heat indices from 100 to 115.

The National Weather Service (NWS) continues excessive heat warning, in effect now until 7 pm Thursday for Floyd, Chickasaw, Mitchell, Howard, Fayette, Winneshiek, Clayton, Butler, Bremer, Franklin, Cerro Gordo, Black Hawk and Allamakee counties.

The NWS cautions those with outdoor activities, especially work related or sports, to watch for any signs of heat related illnesses. Take frequent breaks, drink water regularly, and find locations to cool down in air conditioning if possible.

Heat related illnesses can occur in as little as 30 minutes. Children, pets and the elderly are especially susceptible to the heat.

Avoid prolonged exposure to the heat – postpone or reschedule outdoor activities. Stay hydrated. Double check before you lock your car! Check on the elderly, especially those that may live alone, in mobile homes, or closed up apartments.

Relief from the extreme heat begins Friday with high temperatures coming down to around 90 degrees. Saturday and Sunday highs are expected to be around 81.
