North Iowa Swimming Pools Rebounding from Lifeguard Decertification Issues

Swimming pools across north Iowa are rebounding from the lifeguard certification issues that caused many to shut down last Friday and/or much of the weekend.

Several pools were informed by the American Red Cross last Thursday that an internal audit determined that the lifeguard certifications by a north Iowa instructor were invalid, resulting in the certifications of some 300 lifeguards being revoked immediately. After scrambling over the weekend to recertify lifeguards, all pools have reopened, although some hours may be shortened due to some lingering staff issues brought on by the snafu.

The Mason City Family Aquatic Center led the charge to get lifeguards recertified and Tuesday returned to full operations. Pool officials say the dedication of staff to get lifeguards recertified helped every single person who took the course pass successfully.

The Nora Springs Aquatic Center, the Sheffield Swimming Pool and the St. Ansgar Aquatic Center were among the north Iowa pools impacted by the certification situation and all will be open this week. Still, pool officials advise the public to be prepared for possible hiccups in scheduling.

For pools still somewhat short staffed in the midst temperatures in the 90s this week, frequent breaks are being taken every 45-to-60 minutes to ensure lifeguards are hydrated and are well-rested.
