Prior to Rains Mid-Week, Severe Drought Expands in Floyd, Chickasaw Counties

Prior to rain Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the latest U.S. Drought Monitor for Iowa showed severe drought had expanded in Floyd and Chickasaw counties. Otherwise, there was little change for northeast Iowa areas experiencing severe and/or moderate drought.
Based on precipitation through 7 am Tuesday, July 11th, all of Butler, Bremer, Buchanan and Black Hawk counties, over three-quarters of Fayette County, plus about the southern halves of Floyd and Chickasaw counties, were rated in the D2/severe drought category.
The remainder of both counties were still in the D1/moderate drought category.
Severe drought concerns also reached into eastern sections of Franklin County. Â
The vast majority of Franklin County as well as Cerro Gordo County, plus all of Worth, Mitchell, Howard and Winneshiek counties, along with the northern fourth of Fayette counties remained in the D1/moderate drought category.Â
