The 2023 Charles City BBQ Challenge, scheduled for this Saturday, July 15th in downtown Charles City, has been canceled due to a lack of teams signed up for this year’s event.
Community Development Director Mark Wicks said, “We are extremely disappointed, especially with all the hard work our volunteer committee has put into this, but there simply were not enough BBQ teams registered to make this happen. For various reasons there were a lot of scheduling conflicts that past participants had this year. We certainly appreciate those teams that did register, as well as the sponsors lined up to support putting this on.â€â€
Wicks also noted the committee will be looking at possibly reformatting the BBQ event for next year, as well as looking at dates that might work better for those interested in participating.Â
The annual event has featured a St. Louis-style ribs contest in the past, that included a judging competition as well as a public sampling. The BBQ Challenge has been organized for a number of years by the Charles City Area Chamber of Commerce.
