If you’re planning to shoot off fireworks this holiday weekend, plan on safety first.
Jason Rude is with Chickasaw County Rescue Squad and has over two decades of professional fireworks display experience. He says make sure to have enough space before you light the fuse.
Rude recommends at least 125 feet of clearance in all directions if you’re shooting off larger fireworks, which should never be done while you’re “under the influence.â€
Rude also encourages being courteous to neighbors and not shooting fireworks late at night. It’s also a great idea to alert your neighbors to your fireworks plans, so as to avoid potential problems with the loud noises scaring pets, children, or someone with PTSD.
You should also know your local ordinance. In Charles City, consumer fireworks can not be shot in City limits at any time of the year. In New Hampton, fireworks are allowed between 9 am and 10 pm June 1st through July 8th and December 10th through January 3rd.
