Charles City Man to Serve 5 Years for Crash That Killed Mason City Man
A Charles City man will spend a half-decade behind bars for causing a fatal head-on crash that killed a Mason City man last summer.
On July 25, 2022, 59-year-old Timothy Hoy’s car collided with a vehicle driven by 41-year-old Stephen Miles of Mason City, just west of Nora Springs. Miles died in the wreck and two juveniles in Miles’ vehicle were injured.Â
Hoy was convicted of involuntary manslaughter – public offense OWI, and one count of serious injury by vehicle. A charge of homicide by vehicle – OWI was dismissed as part of a plea deal..Â
In advance of his sentencing hearing this week in Cerro Gordo County District Court, Hoy’s legal defense claimed he had a concussion as a result of the wreck and has no memory of it. However, Hoy acknowledged evidence that the point of impact was over the centerline and at the time of driving, he was under the influence of alcohol.Â
The Cerro Gordo County Sheriff’s Office measured Hoy’s blood alcohol content (BAC) level when the crash occurred at .179%, more than twice the legal BAC limit of .08%.
Monday, Hoy was sentenced to five years in prison and he must pay $150,000 in restitution to the estate of Stephen Miles and cover medical bills for the two juveniles not covered by insurance.
