Mural on Charles City Chamber Building Not Likely

Having a “Welcome to Charles City, Iowa†mural painted on the south side of the Chamber of Commerce building appears unlikely.
The City Council was to take up the issue during their regular meeting June 5th, but Mayor Dean Andrews tabled the topic after the mural committee decided to pull back over concerns about the long term impact painting would have on the building at 401 North Main Street.
Councilman Patrick Lumley said he received feedback about painting murals on Main Street buildings in general.
In March, a mural was proposed for the southside of the Floyd County Law Enforcement Center, but was pulled after most public feedback was against painting on the brand new building.
At least two other murals locations have been finalized for this year: the north side of the Furniture Barn on South Grand Avenue and on the Clark Street side of the Kloberdanz Insurance Office in downtown Charles City.Â
The paintings are part of the “Town of Colors†mural campaign that started with murals on Snap Fitness and First Citizens Bank in 2021. Three more murals were added last year: on the south side of the Wisconsin Street apartment building, the west side of The Rustic Corner, and at the Charles City Whitewater Course.
