North Iowa Daycare Provider to be Arraigned in Death of Child

A north Iowa woman operating an unlicensed daycare will be formally arraigned on charges a child died in her care.

Cresco Police arrested 68-year-old Shirley Weber of Cresco on May 11th, charging her with child endangerment causing death, a Class B felony. Her arrest came almost a year after the child’s death.

According to court documents, on June 28, 2022, Weber was providing daycare to 10 children at her home, despite not being licensed through the state of Iowa.  On that day, authorities say Weber placed a child in his car seat and only buckled the top buckle.  The child slid down in the car seat and was choked to death by that top buckle.

Weber is accused of failing to provide proper supervision which resulted in the child’s death. If convicted, she could serve up to 25 years in prison.

Wednesday, arraignment proceedings were scheduled for June 12th in Howard County District Court, when Weber can enter an official plea to the charge against her.

She is free from custody after paying bail of $25,000.
