Ride of Silence Bike Ride in Charles City Wednesday Night

While bike riders who partake in RAGBRAI are known to strike up conversations with multiple other participants, biking enthusiasts are asked to do the complete opposite Wednesday (05.17)night in Charles City.

Organizer Bob Krueger says the annual “Ride of Silence” honors Charles City-area bicyclists killed after being struck by vehicles.

The most recent victim was Ellen Bengston, who died in August of 2020 after being hit by a pickup south of Charles City. Also being honored are Bob Philips, killed in 2016, and Brian Lauterbach, killed in 2014.

Krueger says the event is also an effort to educate bicyclists and motorists on how to co-exist on the roads.

Krueger says bikers can just show up for the “Ride of Silence” which starts at 7 p.m. Wednesday at The Pub in Charles City. The ride will last about an hour and, unless there’s severe weather, the event will go on rain or shine. Helmets are required.
