Remodeling at the former New Hampton Middle School to make room for a before and after school program for three- and four-year-olds could begin within the next month.
The New Hampton School District is teaming up with Little Sprouts Children’s Center in a joint effort to establish the program to be housed in the former Middle School building, now the district’s elementary school. There, the weight room will be remodeled to accommodate about 55 kids.Â
Superintendent Jay Jurrens says the School Board on Monday approved the lone bid for the project from Don Gardner Construction of Waterloo. An architect’s Initial estimate for the work was $225,000. The approved bid was for almost $280,000 with an alternate bid for a new water heater of just over $7,000.
The school district will contribute $100,000 for the remodeling costs, spread out over a five-year period. Little Sprouts will cover the remaining costs through grants and donations.
Jurrens says construction will begin as soon as possible, likely before school is out for the summer.
The goal is to have the before and after school wraparound program up and running with the start of next school year in August.
