Charles City School Board Rules Out Option for Performing Arts Auditorium

One option for a performing arts auditorium at Charles City High School has been considered an idea not worth consideration.

During their regular meeting Monday night, the Charles City School Board continued weighing solutions for facility upgrades and improvements, plus adding of a performing arts auditorium. Option three on the agenda called for transforming the current old High School gymnasium into an auditorium.

Before Board members even got to discussing the idea, five people made public comments against the idea, including Michelle Grob, who read a letter to the Board from Nancy Western, co-chair of the Friends of Performing Arts committee raising money for a new auditorium.

Former School Board member Missy Freund added that the school needs to provide space for the performing arts like they do athletics.

Superintendent Dr. Anne Lundquist told the Board the concept came from community members suggesting ways to save money. However, Kathryn Fox and her fellow Board members agreed it was not an option to pursue.

The Board continued debating one bond referendum to meet all the needs of the High School or splitting bond votes, one for basic infrastructure needs and one for the performing arts. A decision will need to be made in the coming weeks if the school district hopes to get the measure or measures before voters as early as this September.
