Bird Flu in Chickasaw County Chicken Flock Not a Public Threat

State agriculture officials recently confirmed a positive case of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in a backyard flock in Chickasaw County.

Chickasaw County Public Health Administrator Lisa Welter says representatives from the Iowa Veterinary Lab came to the site to prevent the spread of the bird flu.

Welter says officials believe the likely source of the bird flu was wild birds.

Welter notes the symptoms to watch out for if you have domesticated fowl.

Welter adds that it’s important to get your influenza vaccine every year. It doesn’t guarantee you won’t get human or bird flu, but it can decrease your risk.
