FCMC Dietician Offers Advice for Heart Healthy Diet

February is American Heart Month, focusing on cardiovascular health.

Dietician Kelli Saathoff with Floyd County Medical Center in Charles City  says watching your sodium intake is one way to improve heart health.

Saathoff says good heart health approaches also include cutting down on saturated fats.

Meanwhile, unsaturated fats can be good fats to have in your diet.

Saathoff says fats can be countered by foods high in soluble fiber.

And, if you’re looking for a healthy approach to eating in general, Saathoff says separate your plate into four segments.

According to the CDC, heart disease is the leading cause of death for men, women, and people of most racial and ethnic groups in the United States and one person dies every 34 seconds in the US from cardiovascular disease.
