NIACC Awards Construction Bid for Charles City Career Academy, Waits for Weather

It will cost NIACC almost $5 million to build the new Charles City Career Academy.

The community college’s Board of Trustees has awarded a contract to Woodruff Construction of Waterloo for about $4.8 million.

President Dr. Steve Schultz says now they’ll wait for warmer weather to get construction started.

The Career Academy partnership also includes the Nashua-Plainfield, Rudd-Rockford-Marble Rock, Riceville, North Butler, Clarksville and Osage school districts. Schulz says they’ve been patient partners waiting for things to come together.

Schultz says courses initially will be offered in the areas of health, information technology, constructions and advanced manufacturing.

After first planning to build the career academy on the Floyd County Fairgrounds, rising construction costs forced NIACC to consider other options. Ultimately, they decided to add on to the south side of their existing Charles City NIACC Center just east of Hy-Vee.
