A northeast Iowa man, charged with vehicular homicide in a crash that resulted in the death of his 18-year-old son, appears willing to change his plea.
38-year-old Curtis Williams of West Union faces multiple charges, including homicide by vehicle while operating under the influence, a Class B felony, in connection with incidents in the early morning hours of September 26, 2022. Charges also include eluding-while operating under the influence, a Class D felony; plus OWI and driving while license revoked, both serious misdemeanors.
A Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Deputy attempted a traffic stop of Williams’ vehicle on U.S. Highway 63, but he refused to stop and a pursuit followed at speeds in excess of 105 mph. During the chase, Williams lost control of the vehicle in the curve at the northbound 196-mile marker exit and it rolled into the ditch.
18-year-old Jaxon Williams of Decorah was a passenger in the front seat and was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the wreck.
Charges against Williams were filed in late December after a lengthy investigation conducted by the Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the Iowa State Patrol Traffic Investigator, Iowa DCI Crime Lab, State Medical Examiner and Chickasaw County Attorney’s Office.
Last month, Williams pleaded not guilty to all charges and a trial date is currently scheduled for March 22nd in Chickasaw County District Court in New Hampton.
However, Wednesday (02.15), his attorney filed a request for a hearing to change his plea and for sentencing. Thursday (02.16), a judge set that hearing for March 14th.
Williams remains in the Fayette County Jail in West Union on a $32,000 cash only bond.
