Repairs, Upgrades Still Needed at Charles City High School Despite Failed Bond Referendum

While there will be no special election next month on a proposed $27 million bond referendum to revitalize Charles City High School, the building is still in need of vital upgrades.

During their regular meeting Monday night (02.13), Charles City School Board member, Dr. David Schrodt, gave a report on the recent discussions by the facilities committee over the most pressing fixes facing the building,

Schrodt says Director of Operations Jerry Mitchell will be seeking cost estimates for the upgrades, with the hope the Board will have those numbers to look at during their next work session in March.

The school district came up about 90 signatures short of the 445 needed for a petition to put the bond referendum before voters on March 7th.

The $27 million price tag of the bond referendum would’ve paid for improvements to the High School building, which hasn’t had any major work done to it since it was built in 1960. About a third of the money was targeted for the addition of an 800-seat performing arts auditorium.
