No Petitions Filed to Force Special Election for Chickasaw County Sheriff

There will be no special election for the post of Chickasaw County Sheriff.

Ryan Shawver was Chief Deputy under former Sheriff Marty Hemann, who retired January 19th. On January 23rd, Shawver was appointed by the Board of Supervisors to take over and serve out the remainder of Hemann’s term as Sheriff, which runs through the end of 2024.

Still, any eligible voter in the County had 14 days from Shawver’s appointment to file a petition to force a special election to fill the sheriff’s position. Any petition needed to be filed by Monday, February 6th, but County Auditor Sheila Shekelton says no petition was filed by the deadline. Thus, Shawver will serve out the rest of Hemann’s term, although he will have to run for election to keep the job into 2025.

Meanwhile, Shawver plays the waiting game to fill his prior position as Chief Deputy. He would like to hire current New Hampton Police Chief Zach Nosbisch, but Monday, Supervisors decided to make sure proper procedure was followed by advertising the open position for at least 10 days on the County website and Facebook pages.

That job was officially posted Tuesday, February 7th, giving those interested until February 17th to apply for the position.

With the delay in potentially hiring Nosbisch, that led Nosbisch to postpone submitting his resignation during the New Hampton City Council meeting Monday night as he had hoped. Still, in anticipation of his departure, the Council decided to continue with the plan to take applications for Nosbisch’s replacement through February 24th.
