Shawver Steps Into New Role as Chickasaw County Sheriff
It’s the second full week on the job for Ryan Shawver in his new role as Chickasaw County Sheriff.
Shawver was the Chief Deputy under former Sheriff Marty Hemann, who retired January 19th. Monday, Jan. 23, Shawver was appointed to take over and serve out the remainder of Hemann’s term as Sheriff, which runs through the end of 2024.
Shawver says he’s adjusting to his new position.
While no decisions have been made on its future, Shawver could see eventual changes to the Chickasaw County Jail, which was built over six decades ago, but is now falling short of state operational standards. Shawver says he’s aware of the jail’s history and its current needs.
Shawver has been with the Chickasaw County Sheriff’s Office since 2012, becoming a deputy after four years as a New Hampton Police officer.
His appointment as sheriff became official on January 23, but any eligible voter in the County could still file a petition to force a special election to fill the post. Any petition would need to be filed by Monday, February 6th. If Shawver serves out the rest of Hemann’s term, he would have to run for election to keep the job into 2025.
