Orville Scholbrock, 86, Charles City

Orville Scholbrock, 86, of Charles City, died Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the Nora Springs Care Center in Nora Springs, Iowa.

A gathering of family and friends will be from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Charles City; beginning with the rosary at 4:30p.m. Visitation will continue one hour prior to the service on Friday at the church.

A funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 13, 2023, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with Reverend Tom Heathershaw officiating. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Charles City.

Orville John Scholbrock was the second child born to Clem and Dorothy (Holthaus) Scholbrock on a farm north of Ossian on September 24, 1936. They lived in Ossian until the family moved to Cresco when Orville was in the 8th grade. He graduated from Notre Dame Catholic High School in Cresco. He worked at Oliver tractor plant starting 11-11-1954 and stayed there until the plant closed in 1993. He then worked at Allied Construction until his retirement in 2000. He was united in marriage to Teresa A. Carolan on 3-31-1959 at Queen of Angels Catholic Church in Austin, MN. To this union six children were born: Kevin (Lois) Scholbrock of Des Moines; Vicky (Randy) Burrack of Longmont, CO; Charlotte (Galen) Greenzweig of Charles City; Julie (Mark) D’Ambrosi of Old Saybrook, CT; James (LuAnn) Scholbrock of Lake Mills and Gregory (Dawn) Scholbrock of Eagan, MN. Grandchildren: Maggie (Bryan) Fiala, Haley (Liz) Burrack, Jason (Hillary Dickens) Scholbrock, Cory Burrack, Schae (Clay) Geiter, Luke D’Ambrosi, Paul (Morgan) Scholbrock, Grant (Martina) Greenzweig, Matthew (Megan) Scholbrock, Sophia (Nick Schultz) D’Ambrosi, Jacob Greenzweig, Lauren (Andrew Meister) Scholbrock, Kara Scholbrock, Noah D’Ambrosi, Mason Scholbrock, and Logan Scholbrock. Great grandchildren: Bryson Fiala, Colby Burrack, Theo Burrack and Kattaleah Greenzweig.

Orville was a faithful servant of God and attended Immaculate Conception mass daily, following retirement when possible. In earlier years, he was active in St. Vincent de Paul Society and coordinated many Thanksgiving meal collections and delivery over the years to help those in his community. He delivered meals on wheels, was a past lector, communion distributor, usher, funeral singer, and greeter at church.

After retirement, he and Teresa spent winters in Texas. He had an interest in farming and spent many spring and fall days helping friends and family with field work. He loved children, as became more evident in his special interest in his grandbabies, and was very active in raising his own children. He would come home from work and, if not helping with paper routes, he would have coffee and cookies with Teresa and then begin fixing whatever needed repairing with function taking priority over form, helping with dinner by washing the dishes nightly with one of his kids on drying duty, helping with homework, and putting kids to bed. Many nights he was up with Teresa caring for sick children. He has been described as loving, kind, humble, resourceful, punctual, faithful, devoted, respectful, hardworking, and selfless.

Orville leaves behind a sister Ivy (Sylvester) Zobeck of Waukon, brother Wayne (Jayne) Scholbrock of Cresco, and in-laws Judy Aberg of Cresco, Jean Walsh, Gary (Lynn) Carolan and Dan (Carol) Carolan all of Austin, MN and Diana (Paul) Gartner of Fort Collins, CO. He was preceded in death by his wife Teresa on May 11, 2022, his parents, his in-laws, Melvin and Ruth Carolan, his brother, Lowell, sister and her husband, Beverly (Roger) Svestka, his brother-in-law, Richard Walsh, and several other family members and close friends.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to the staff at the Nora Springs Care Center for the excellent, and personalized, care they provided to Dad.

Memorials will be directed to Immaculate Conception School and other charities.
