Chickasaw County To Interview Sheriff Candidates

Chickasaw County will interview a pair of possible candidates to replace Sheriff Marty Hemann, who will retire later this month.

Among the replacement hopefuls is Hemann’s Chief Deputy Ryan Shawver, who received a strong endorsement from Chuck Stanton, who addressed the Board of Supervisors regular meeting on Tuesday (12.27).

Supervisor Chair Matt Kuhn said Supervisors had also received several letters of recommendations on behalf of Shawver, who is the only candidate that currently meets the stipulation that whoever is appointed Sheriff must live in Chickasaw County for at least 60 days prior to the appointment, which itself can’t be made until the position officially becomes open when Hemann retires January 19th.

Supervisors decided to go through the official process and interview the candidates, with the help of Hemann.

Whether he’s appointed or not, by state code, Shawver would assume the role of Sheriff when Hemann retires on January 19th. Whoever is appointed, anyone in the County could still file a petition within 14 days of the appointment to call for a special election to fill the post.

Of the four candidates who expressed interest in the position, only two met the requirement that they are certified peace officers. Supervisors have scheduled an interview with Shawver at 6 pm Wednesday night, followed by a 7 pm interview with Dan Sargent, currently a deputy with the Floyd County Sheriff’s Office.
