New Parking Restrictions in Effect in Downtown Charles City

Just over a week after they were approved by the City Council, new parking restrictions are now in effect for downtown Charles City.

The new parking restrictions went into effect Wednesday after City crews installed signage for the impacted streets. Parking is now limited to 90-minutes at a time for the two-block section of Main Street between Riverside Drive and Kelly Street. Changes also include the elimination of the “no parking” restriction from 2 to 6 a.m. on Main Street.

City Administrator Steve Diers says the changes are being made to make parking in front of downtown businesses more accessible all hours of the day. The move is also to encourage an increase in the use of City parking lots, which are available behind businesses in that two-block area to the west and east of Main Street.

However, the resolution also limits the parking of a vehicle in City lots to no more than 48 hours at any one time. All changes are also expected to help make snow removal easier in the downtown area.
