New Parking Restrictions Coming to Downtown Charles City

New parking restrictions are coming to downtown Charles City.

The City Council Monday night approved a resolution to limit parking to 90-minutes at a time for the two-block section of Main Street between Riverside Drive and Kelly Street. The resolution will also eliminate the “no parking” restriction from 2 to 6 a.m. on Main Street.

Councilman Keith Starr made the motion to pass the measure.

Councilman Patrick Lumley agreed, while comparing the parking resolution to an ordinance passed earlier this year.

City Administrator Steve Diers says the changes are being made to make parking in front of downtown businesses more accessible all hours of the day while encouraging more use of City parking lots available behind businesses in that two-block area to the west and east of Main Street.

However, the resolution also limits the parking of a vehicle in City lots to no more than 48 hours at any one time. All changes are also expected to help make snow removal easier in the downtown area.

The new parking restrictions will take effect once the signs are put up along the affected areas.
