Calling Off NIACC Classes Due to Weather Not an Easy Call

The NIACC Campus in Mason City will be closed on Thursday due to inclement weather.

NIACC President Steve Schultz says calling off classes at the community college is not an easy call to make.

As a former school superintendent himself, Schultz says he still takes an “old school” approach to determining whether to delay or call off classes and consults with his facilities team to assess road conditions.

Even if classes are only delayed due to the weather, Schultz says it’s ultimately for students who commute to decide if they’re driving in.

Schultz also notes that they will take bids starting in February on expanding the Charles City NIACC Center to add the new Charles City Career Academy. He says they hope construction can begin in April and have the center open in time for the 2024-25 school year.
