Use Available DOT Resources to Help Plan Your Travel

Monitoring weather forecasts in advance of the pending winter storm descending on Iowa should be one part of making decisions on any travel plans Wednesday night into Friday morning.

Pete Hjelmstad, with the Mason City District office of the Iowa DOT, says you can get the forecast, plus detailed road conditions and more with the enhanced Iowa 511 app.

Still, Hjelmstad says your travel decisions should not be solely based on the information from the Iowa 511 app.

Hjelmstad also notes that the DOT utilizes their supervisors in their shops like Charles City, New Hampton and Osage to begin monitoring travel conditions in advance of winter storms. 

If you are traveling in inclement weather, Hjelmstad encourages motorists to buckle up and keep distracted driving to a minimum.
