Interest in Chickasaw County Sheriff Appointment Due Friday, Dec. 22

Chickasaw County Sheriff Marty Hemann is retiring, effective January 20th. Who will succeed him is yet to be determined.

The Chickasaw County Board of Supervisors have announced their intention to appoint Hemann’s successor, but cannot do so until after the sheriff’s position becomes officially vacant.

Those interested in being appointed to the post must submit their names to the County Auditor’s office by 4 p.m. Friday, December 22.

County Attorney David Laudner notes a special requirement for applicants outside of Chickasaw County.

Whoever is ultimately appointed, that person would have to run for election next November to keep the job.

However, after the appointment is made, anyone from the public would have 14 days in which to file a petition to force a special election for the next sheriff.

State code calls from Chief Deputy Ryan Shawver to take over as Chickasaw County Sheriff as of January 20th, although he could also be appointed and has expressed interest in succeeding Hemann.
