Meals On Wheels in Charles City to End Service in December

The Meals on Wheels program in Charles City is coming to an end in about a month.

In a statement, Board Chair Dennis Niezwaag says several factors are playing a role in discontinuing the service. He cites that program partner, Apple Valley Assisted Living, could not continue providing meals for the program for various reasons including rising costs.

Apple Valley stepped in to save the program a couple of years ago when Floyd County Medical Center discontinued providing the meals. However, this time, Niezwaag says there are no other providers on the horizon.

He says other factors impacting the future of the program include a shortage of drivers and that three of the five members of the Meals on Wheels board are going through life changes that are leading them to leave the organization.

Niezwaag also notes that the Charles City Senior Center continues to provide mid day meals for a very reasonable cost and there are now more businesses who will deliver meals directly to your door.

He says the last day that Meals on Wheels will be delivered in Charles City will be Tuesday, December 20.
