Agricultural Exports Supported $369 Billion In U.S. Economic Activity

For Iowa agriculture, international markets do a lot more than just clear out bin space—they drive an economic engine.

According to new USDA figures, U.S. agricultural exports generated $369.2 billion in total economic activity in 2024. While total ag exports—including biofuels—reached $177.2 billion, those sales generated another $192 billion right here at home through processing, transport, storage, and financial services.

In fact, USDA estimates that every single export dollar supports $2.08 in domestic business.

Bulk shipments of Iowa staples like corn and soybeans brought in $56.4 billion globally, driving $51.5 billion in additional domestic trade. But our biggest value-add comes from non-bulk products like pork, ethanol, and soybean meal. Those high-value exports totaled $120.8 billion and generated an extra $140.5 billion back home.

From ethanol plants and local grain elevators to regional truckers, strong ag exports keep Iowa’s economy moving far beyond the farm gate.
