Marble Rock Fire Started While Burn Ban Was Violated

Multiple outbuildings were destroyed and two neighboring garages sustained minor damages following a fire in Marble Rock Wednesday night.

In a Facebook post, the Marble Rock Fire Department says that, “Upon MRFD’s arrival there were three outbuildings on fire as well as garages on two neighboring properties receiving heat damage. The fire was under control shortly after our arrival and crews spent around an hour performing overhaul and putting out hotspots.”

The three outbuildings were a total loss and the two neighboring garages received very minor damage. Officials say the fire was started by the property owner burning trash in open barrels, with fire spreading from the barrels to dry leaves in the yard and then to the buildings.

The Facebook post also says, “This situation highlights why burn bans are put in place, and why city code prohibits the burning of trash. The property owner will receive a citation for violating the Burn Ban that is currently in place and remains in place until further notice!”

The Greene, Rockford and Charles City Fire Departments, Floyd County Search & Rescue, and Nora Springs Police Department also assisted at the scene.
