Floyd County Joins Mitchell, Howard Counties in Burn Ban

Floyd County has joined Howard and Mitchell counties in enacting a burn ban.

A Charles City Fire Department Facebook post reads, “Due to extremely dry vegetation, the lack of precipitation and little precipitation (in the) forecast, the Fire Chiefs of Floyd County have enacted a burn ban for the County effective immediately, and until further notice.

This ban includes Charles City, but does not prohibit cooking or recreational fires within Charles City city limits, which outgoing Fire Chief Eric Whipple says requires continued attention.

Extra precautions are also being required for recreational fires within Charles City, including a wire mesh to surround the fire pit and a lid to protect from embers leaving the pit. Charles City residents are also reminded that burning of leaves within city limits CONTINUES to be prohibited, per city ordinance.

Whipple also encourages farmers to have fire extinguishers ready during harvest season.

New Floyd County Emergency Management/Safety Coordinator Jason Webster submitted the burn ban request on behalf of the county’s fire departments to the state, which was approved by State Fire Marshal Dan Wood
