The person who died following an apartment fire in north Iowa last weekend has been identified.
The Mason City Fire Department was called to The Manor on 3rd Street Northwest just after 6 p.m. Saturday night. Firefighters located the fire in apartment 549, where the fire sprinkler system had extinguished the fire.
The resident from the apartment where the fire originated was transported to MercyOne North Iowa Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The deceased has been identified as 78-year-old Ronald Smith.
Five other residents were displaced for one night.
Fire Marshal Jamey Medlin says the fire was accidental, caused by smoking materials.
