New Hampton Adds New City Council Member, Needs RAGBRAI Police

The newest member of the New Hampton City Council is already heavily involved in city-related business.

During the May 2nd City Council meeting, Mayor Bobby Schwickerath announced the resignation of Ward 3 Councilman Bob Boos. At this week’s council meeting, New Horizons Chamber Director Jason Speltz was appointed by Schwickerath to fill the vacancy.

Speltz will serve out the remainder of the Ward 3 term which runs through the end of 2023. However, a special election to fill the post could occur, if a petition with at least 38 signatures of Ward 3 residents is submitted within 14 days of the Mayor’s appointment.

The City is also looking to “appoint” some temporary police officers when RAGBRAI passes through New Hampton on July 29th. The Council gave approval to Police Chief CZach Nosbisch to advertise for extra help, which Schwickerath says is proving hard to find.

Scwhickerath says one New Hampton police officer is already slated to be on leave and it’s possible another could also be on leave at RAGBRAI time.
