Applications Accepted for Upcoming Vacant Floyd County Supervisor Seat

Anyone interested in becoming the Floyd County District 3 Supervisor has two weeks to submit their application for appointment to the post.

Republican Jeff Hawkbaker won the November 8th election for the District 3 seat. However, 10 days later, Hawbaker announced that he would decline the nomination because he was unable to retire from his day job in 2023, preventing him from devoting enough time to serve as Supervisor.

By statute, a committee of the county auditor, recorder and treasurer can appoint someone to take Hawbaker’s seat. However, that appointment can not be made until January 2nd, when the District 3 term officially begins.

Any eligible elector interested has until 4 p.m. Wednesday, December 28th to submit their application to the auditor’s office. Applicants must have resided in District 3 for at least 60 days prior to being appointed. Applicants could also have up to five minutes make their pitch during the appointment meeting on January 2nd.

Eligible electors of the district can also file a petition with the County requiring that the vacancy be filled by special election. The petition requires at least 192 signatures of eligible voters in the district and be filed within 14 days after the notice of intent to appoint, which was published last week. A petition for special election could also be filed within 14 days of the actual appointment.

Combined with wins by Democrat Mark Kuhn for District 1 and Republican Dennis Keifer in District 2, the Floyd County Board of Supervisors was set to have three new supervisors across the board come January. That could still happen, but not with Hawbaker in office.
