Correction: Closure of Main Street at Charles City Chicken Processing Plant This Summer

To allow for expansion of Pure Prairie Farms (PPF) in Charles City, the City will be vacating North Main Street directly in front of the chicken processing plant.

Earlier this month, we reported that the closure would not happen this year, but that was not correct. We misinterpreted the comments of City Administrator Steve Diers from this appearance on KCHA on May 18th and we apologize for the error.

Diers says closing North Main from Lane Street to North Grand Avenue will allow the PPF trucks in and out of the plant more efficiently, and will occur sometime this summer. When it does, Diers says several traffic-related issues should be resolved.

Diers adds that more traffic changes are also expected as the nearby Depot Train Museum is developed, plus the eventual extension of the Charley Western Trail into that area.

Diers also notes that when North Main Street in front for PPF is eventually vacated, the City will maintain ownership of the street in case the need arises to open it back up to regular traffic. However, he says city officials hope PPF is successful so that doesn’t happen.
