Bear Sighted in Northeast Iowa, Residents Advised to Let It Be

Authorities in northeast Iowa are cautioning citizens about a black bear, sighted several times around the Memorial Day weekend.

A Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office Facebook post indicated the bear was seen in Hesper on Thursday and has included video footage of the animal walking through the neighborhood.

A Decorah Police Department Facebook post Saturday said they had received several reports of a black bear seen walking by the bike trail near Trout Run Park. It eventually crossed Highway 9, south near the quarry area.

Officials say the Iowa DNR is aware of the bear and would like to remind everyone NOT to approach or try to get close to the bear. Residents are also reminded to make sure garages/sheds are shut and garbage is brought inside.

They also cautioned those grilling during the Memorial Day Weekend to be alert, because bears are attracted to the food aroma just like people.
