Free Milkweed Seeds Available in Charles City
May 7 @ 8:00 am - May 25 @ 5:00 pm
The Floyd County Ikes are offering free milkweed seeds to help the Monarch Butterflies. The Monarch’s are totally dependent on the milkweed plant for their main source of food on their migration to Mexico each fall as well as for their own reproduction. Since 1992, 80% of the milkweeds have disappeared in the U.S. due to herbicides and with it, the Monarch population.
You can help! Free seed packets of 14 seeds can be picked up at Schueth Ace Hardware, located at 300 Gilbert Street or at Arnold Motor Supply, located at 610 S. Main Street, both in Charles City.
Plant the seeds this spring with watering for 2 weeks so the plants will be available for this fall’s Monarch migration. Plant them where there is sun around the end of your garden or in the wide open spaces.
The free seeds will be available while supplies last.
