Floyd County Medical Center $40 Million Expansion Almost 90% Complete

A $40 million dollar expansion and remodeling project at Floyd County Medical Center (FCMC) continues on track.
Marketing Director Makenzie McNeill says, the largest expansion of the Charles City hospital since it was built in 1965, is looking more and more like the renderings, with most work now occurring on the inside.
McNeill says it could also be June when the hospital learns of a decision by the Iowa State Supreme Court on the lawsuit between Mayo Clinic and FCMC regarding the $10 million estate donation of Nashua-area farmer Herman Stille.
When Stille passed away in 2020, he pledged the $10 million to FCMC under two conditions: FCMC remain an independent hospital and funds be used to establish a cancer center in Charles City. If FCMC was unable to meet those requirements, the money would go to the Mayo Clinic for Alzheimer’s research.
In June 2025, Chickasaw County District Court Judge Richard Stochl ruled in favor of FCMC, but Mayo challenged that decision, claiming FCMC can not meet all of the stipulations called for in Stille’s will.
Mayo’s appeal would reach the Iowa Supreme Court, which took up the matter again last month in Des Moines. Even after oral arguments wrap up, it could be weeks or months before a ruling is handed down.
FCMC has said, regardless of the outcome, the hospital remains committed to bringing oncology services to the Charles City community.
