Supervisors Asked to Step In to Address Floyd Township Fire Protection Dispute

The Floyd County Board of Supervisors has been asked to resolve the fire protection dispute in Floyd Township.

The Floyd Community Volunteer Fire Department and the township Board of Trustees have been at an impasse since their most recent contract expired June 30th. That has left the township without official fire protection since.

This week, Supervisors received a letter from an attorney for the Valero Renewables ethanol plant, which sits in Floyd Township, asking the Board to address the lack of fire protection.

Valero’s letter states, Not only is this an extreme hazard to life and property–it’s unlawful. Valero requests that the Trustees resolve this matter immediately.” Valero also cites Iowa Code that requires the Trustees to provide the Ethanol Plant with fire protection services and not doing so is an unlawful dereliction of duty.

The Board said they’ll continue to monitor the situation, but Supervisors Linda Tjaden and Roy Schwickerath questioned how involved the County should be.

Valero has asked Supervisors to act by September 30th and also noted that the operation pays its taxes and contributes to the economic growth in Floyd Township, which calls for a reciprocal effort to provide fire protection services.
