Charles City Hires Engineer for Main Street Rehab Project

The City of Charles City has begun paving the way for rehabilitation of Main Street with the hiring of an engineer for the project.

During their regular meeting Monday night, the City Council approved a contract with Veenstra and Kimm of Mason City to provide engineering services for just under $100,000.

City Engineer John Fallis told the Council the rehab will include milling and filling of the street, plus patching as needed, curb and gutter work and ADA-compliant sidewalks.

The project, which will not start until federal fiscal year 2024, does not include paving Main Street bridge, which is the subject of a feasibility study approved earlier this year by the Council to determine whether to replace or rehab it. In the meantime, Mayor Dean Andrews says paving the bridge with the Main Street Rehab is an option that warrants consideration.

The City has received SWAP funding for the construction through the Surface Transportation Block Grant (STBG).

Fallis noted that field survey work could start this fall with designs being developed over the winter and bid letting by October 1, 2023.
