Monkeypox Makes Way to the Midwest

Two weeks ago, Minnesota health officials say a Twin Cities adult has contracted the state’s first presumed case of monkeypox, a disease that has emerged in more than 50 countries and 26 U.S. states.

This week, the first probable case of Monkeypox was identified in Iowa.

Chickasaw County Public Health Administrator Lisa Welter advises staying alert for possible symptoms of monkeypox, which has similarities to smallpox, but is not related to chicken pox.

As with any illness, Welter says you can help curb the spread of diseases and germs.

Welter adds that monkeypox was most likely brought into the United States by people who traveled internationally and, while some antiviral drugs have been used to treat monkeypox, the CDC is not recommending any mass vaccinations.
