Final Week for Free Summer Lunch Program

It’s the final week of the free Summer Lunch Program.

The free summer lunches, along with lunches during the school year, have been provided to school districts free since mid-March of 2020. When the COVID-19 pandemic took off, the federal government began paying for the lunches to offer financial relief to families, but the Summer Food Program will end this Thursday, June 30th, which coincides with the end of the 2021-22 academic year.

Charles City Community Schools are making free summer lunches available to all children in the community through the age of 18 without charge on a first come, first served basis, at Washington Elementary School from 11 a.m. to noon each weekday, with the final day this Thursday. Parents are encouraged to accompany younger children and no food is to be shared or carried out of the building.

The New Hampton School District has made pickup of meals available Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout June at Runion Park in New Hampton from 11:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.;  Immaculate Conception Church in North Washington from 11:30 a.m. to noon; and the Alta Vista city parking lot from 12:15-12:30 p.m. Meal distribution goes through Tuesday, June 28th, but that day will also include meals through June 30th.

In addition to the free grab and go meals, each child in the program can receive one free gallon of milk each week of the program.

Student in-school meals will return to being paid for by his or her family with the 2022-23 school year.
