Charles City Schools to Review Dropout Process

The Charles City School District will examine their dropout process after seeing an increased number of dropouts this past school year.

At this week’s School Board meeting, High School Principal Brian Jurrens presented preliminary graduation figures for the Class of 2022. 91 of 98 CCHS seniors graduated, an almost 93% graduation rate. The state average is 90%.

However, when the Carrie Lane High School graduation rate of about 54% and Innovative Campus rate of about 38% are factored in, the overall graduation rate slips to around 80%.

Like many school districts across the county, Jurrens says COVID  played a big part in increased dropout rates, with lingering effects.

Jurrens says getting students to stay in school is also now being challenged by jobs.

Jurrens adds that they’ll continue to evaluate the district’s dropout process, noting that adjustments are likely for the Innovative Campus, which just completed its inaugural school year.

Jurrens also noted that seniors from last year can still officially graduate as part of the Class of ‘22 if they finished their required credits prior to the first day of school of the new school year, which for CCCSD is August 24th.
