A pair of Tennessee men were arrested on drug charges following a traffic stop this weekend just west of Charles City.
The Floyd County Sheriff’s Office says they stopped a vehicle for going 84 mph in a 65 mph zone near mile marker 214 on Highway 27 at about 5 a.m. Sunday morning. According to the criminal complaint, a deputy says a marijuana blunt in plain view led to a search of the vehicle and the discovery of more marijuana and cocaine, plus a needle containing liquid cocaine.
As a result, 61-year-old Walter Holmes of Memphis, Tennessee, was arrested on two counts of possession of a controlled substance, both serious misdemeanors. Authorities say while Holmes was being booked into the Floyd County Jail, he took cocaine out of his pants and placed it in his mouth. Holmes spit the substance out and stated it was cocaine, which got him the added charge of possession of contraband in a correctional institution, a Class D felony.
Also arrested was 18-year-old Deshawn Richardson, also of Memphis, on two counts of possession of controlled substances, both serious misdemeanors.
The sheriff’s office says additional charges are pending.
