Replacement of Charles City High School Track Underway

A project delayed by almost a year is underway at Charles City High School.

The track around the Comets’ football field was to be resurfaced with a new overlay last August, but once work began, crews and school officials found that the track had been resurfaced so many times, adding another layer would not solve the problem long term. It was determined to take the track “back down to the studs” by removing the multi-layered track completely and replacing it with a new track that would last the school district several years into the future.

Thus, the project was halted and delayed until after this past track season finished. Director of Operations Jerry Mitchell says work resumed a couple of weeks ago, although weather has delayed crews from grinding up the track, with hopes of completing it next week.

Mitchell says they’re also redoing the cement for the long jump area near the north end zone and, later this summer, the shot put will be relocated by the discus. An additional cement pad is also planned for the discus practice area.

Mitchell adds that conduit has also been installed from the scoreboard to the south play clock, eliminating the need to run an extension cord to operate the play clock during football games.
