Retention Bonuses Approved for 2022-23 School Year for Charles City Subs

Looking to retain substitute teachers, para educators and substitute bus drivers, the Charles City School Board approved retention bonuses for those employees for next school year.

Last November, in an effort to address staffing shortages, the school district upped substitute teacher pay to $125 a day, plus the opportunity to earn a $500 bonus for every 30 days worked. At their regular meeting Monday, the School Board voted to continue the retention bonus, but in revised fashion.

Para educators and substitute bus drivers were not included in the bonus program this school year, but that will change for the 2022-23 school year as the board acknowledged that shortages in those areas are also expected to continue.

Under the plan approved Monday, paraeducators and sub bus drivers can also earn a $500 bonus for every 30 days worked with a cap of $1,000.

District Director of Finance Evan Marten says COVID ESSER funds will be used to cover the bonus payments.
