Number of Apartments on the Rise in Charles City, House Construction Continues to Lag

While the building of new single-family homes in Charles City continues to lag, the number of apartments is on the rise.

City Administrator Steve Diers says The Union House has been completed with over half of the some three dozen apartment units downtown already rented. He says another 40 residential units will come with the remodeling of the 1930’s portion of the former middle school building on North Grand Avenue.

Diers says officials also hope to see construction of Birkwood Village, across the street from Floyd County Medical Center, start soon.

Diers adds that construction in the Parkside Development along South Main Street also continues, with plans to finish building homes on the 24 lots within the next two years.

He says all those projects together will mean an increase of almost 180 residential units in Charles City.

Diers admits spurring the building of more single-family homes has been a tough nut to crack, but the City continues to explore options available.
