Northeast Iowa Man Arrested on Drug, Firearm, Eluding Charges

A traffic stop that led to a high-speed chase that ended with the suspect crashing his car, has a northeast Iowa man facing drug, firearm and eluding charges.

The Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office says 20-year-old Michael Foland of Calmar is in custody after an incident which started just before 9:30 p.m. Monday night. A deputy pulled over Foland’s vehicle in Decorah and recognized Foland as being wanted on three felony arrest warrants.  After stopping briefly, Foland fled in the vehicle and led authorities on a high-speed pursuit north of Decorah, through a farm field and back towards Decorah. As Foland attempted to drive over the dike near Fifth Avenue and College Drive in Decorah, he rolled the vehicle, making it inoperable.

After a lengthy standoff with law enforcement, Foland was arrested and transported to the Winneshiek County Jail without further incident. He was not injured while a sheriff’s squad car was damaged during the pursuit.

Foland was wanted initially from an incident on April 28th, for he was charged with possession of a firearm by a felon, failure to affix a drug stamp and violation of probation. As a result of his actions Monday night,  Foland was additionally charged with aggravated misdemeanor eluding, serious misdemeanor possession of controlled substance, reckless driving, and simple misdemeanor interference with official acts.

The Decorah Police Department and Iowa State Patrol assisted in the chase and apprehension of Foland.
